Keeping Skunks Out of the Garbage Cans
After throwing away a garbage bag, you might not put much thought into it until it is time for garbage pickup. That is how things should be, at least.
Problems can arise quickly once skunks get involved, however. If there is any scent of food, or if they are at all curious, you are going to see skunks forcing their way into your garbage cans.
To them, it is part of the hunt for food. They want something to eat and your garbage can smells like a perfect meal to them.
To you, it is a mess. They tear into bags, throw the can around, and create havoc that you have to clean up.
Luckily, it is easy to keep the skunks out of the garbage cans and keep them from making another mess.
Losing Interest
Skunks will sniff out your garbage cans if they think there is food. All types of food can attract them, particularly food with a strong odor.
You cannot avoid throwing out things that smell. There is a reason you throw things out, obviously, and you cannot get around that.
What you can do is limit what you throw away or control it somewhat. Try to throw away less and tightly seal foods that you do throw away.
There are other odor control methods available, such as using bags designed to keep in odors or using odor removing products. These, alongside managing what you throw away and how, will reduce the odor that attracts skunks.
Securing the Can
No matter what you do, there is the risk of skunks getting into the garbage can. They know it is a source of food and they want something from it. Hungry wild animals will do whatever they can to grab a meal.
Thankfully, there are products and methods to combat thing. You can use products that seal the can so that skunks cannot open it. These items latch on to the can and make it impossible for skunks, and similar animals, to get inside of it.
Another option, if you can, is to keep the cans indoors. If you have a garage or similar area where you can store the cans, do it. The skunks cannot get to it there.
Do not let skunks continue to make a mess of your garbage. Stop the headaches with a few simple methods that are easy to employ and show great results.
