Keeping Groundhogs Away from the Property
Anyone who has ever had a groundhog problem knows how difficult they can be. Destruction of your yard and garden, hazards to your safety due to holes, and general annoyances from having a pest on your property can leave you frustrated.
Keeping the groundhogs away becomes a necessity. Even if you somehow manage to get them out once, you want to find a way to keep them out for good. After all, if they get in once, they can get in again. You need to stop them before they are able to do that.
There are some reliable ways to keep the groundhogs out. You can implement these easily and trust that they will work.
A Secure Property
Have a solid, high quality fence for starters. The groundhogs may get in from underground, but they are only going to dig so far.
Fences in poor condition will not help in keeping them out. You want to create a solid foundation from the start, ensuring they have no way in even if they tried.
Consider having a solid fence around your garden, too. When groundhogs do get inside your yard, that garden fence makes it nearly impossible for them to get food. They will have to go elsewhere if they want to eat.
No Food for Them
Groundhogs go to properties that they think will have food. If there is any source of food, they have a reason to stick around.
Pick up foods that may feed them and avoid putting down anything they would want. Things like bird seed or other foods may attract the groundhogs.
If you have a garden, remember to harvest your fruits and vegetables immediately. The moment you can, remove them and bring them in so that the groundhogs do not have a chance to get to them.
Repellents
Repellents are not highly effective, but can help somewhat. Certain repellents built for groundhogs can assist when used together with the above.
Choose safe repellents and place them around the garden or locations where the groundhog is likely to go.
Trapping
Whenever a groundhog does get inside, do not be afraid to trap it. Both live and kill traps can work with groundhogs, and both are highly effective.
Keeping a groundhog out of your property does not have to be frightening. There are proven, safe methods of keeping them out – take advantage of them.
